Who are Discalced Carmelites?

The Discalced Carmelites are a Roman Catholic religious community of priests, brothers, nuns, and laity serving the Church through lives of prayer and ministry, in a fraternal setting. Our roots go back to twelfth-century hermits on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. The Discalced Carmelites were established by St. Teresa of Avila in 1562 and St. John of the Cross in 1568 to renew the Order’s commitment to contemplation, simplicity, and community.

Centuries of
experience

We are Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, of The Commissariat of St. Joseph-Kenya. Our roots began in Palestine, 13th Century. We were reformed (founded) by St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross in the 16th century. Today we are headquartered in Rome and answer to our immediate superior, the Commissar Fr. Peter Canisius.

Inspired by Christ and rooted in the Carmelite tradition.

we live the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience in prayer, fraternity, and service. 

Chastity

We dedicate our hearts fully to God, living in love, purity, and faithful service to His people.

Poverty

We embrace simplicity, sharing all things in a spirit of trust in God and solidarity with others.

Obedience

We freely seek and follow God’s will through the Church, our superiors, and the needs of our community.
